Back in ye olden days I was a sign maker.
But then summer came.
I do not prefer heat.
I heart air conditioning.
My sewing machine was in the cool house.
The saw was in the inferno backyard.
Honestly, I had no choice.
So I left the paint and sawdust for fabric and thread.
{But mostly for the air conditioning. Or the pretty fabric. Or both.}
Once in a while the saw calls to me.
I want to make a batch of signs for The Queen Bee Market, but I am stuck.
I need inspiration.
Words.
Colors.
Ideas.
What words would you hang in your homes?
What colors would you want them in?
I have a gorgeous pack of Amy Butler paper that is awaiting letters.
Go...
Fill my booth with wordy goodness.
My favorite sign in my home is a grungy one from a farmer's market that says "The Gathering Room". It hangs above the french doors in our family room. I also love the "Always Kiss Me Goodnight" above our bed ;)
ReplyDeleteSigns I have envisioned but refuse to learn how to make:
ReplyDeletewelcome
no (I have a random hotel door hanger that says no in white letters on a red background- it hangs on the outside of the bathroom door...not that the kids read it and leave the shut door shut, but whatevs.)
play
read
try
work
cook
my house was clean yesterday...sorry you missed it
dream
leave your shoes...bring your feet
laughter is heard here
I have a zillion more...
my favs: sew. craft. create. love. shine. glorify.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sign is my "SERENITY" sign......reminds me that, well, it just reminds me that serenity is probably really really neat. I sure wish I had some?!?! ;) My second is my sign that says "Drink coffee. Do stupid things faster with more energy". That is my motto.
ReplyDelete~ I have a little sign that is from Christmas that says "Love Came Down". I leave it up all year long because it's a lovely reminder.
ReplyDeleteI heart my HOPE sign that I bought from you about a year ago. Some of my favorite words and phrases would be: ENJOY, DELIGHT, HOME, WELCOME, BE STILL, TRUST, BELIEVE
ReplyDeleteWords that inspire and remind me of TRUTH.
I proudly hang my "faith" sign made by you, I won a give away... The bright fun funky colors against the black are FUN!
ReplyDeleteHow about "inspire"? But "Grace" is my favorite word...ever. :) As for colors, any color associated with Amy Butler is good in my book.

I made a sign with vinyl letters that I love - it reads "love god. love others." Several people have asked me to make one for them. Best of luck with your sign making! :)
ReplyDeletei love your signs. not sure if you want to do just generic words (which are lovely)... but i'd love to be able to do a custom order for my child's name or our last name.
ReplyDeletesome words i'dlike to have in certain places around my house are:

ReplyDeleteListen
ReplyDeleteSee
Hold Me.
All I have is Now.
All that I Am.
Through my Child's Eyes.
You have already gotten some fab advice on words. The only one I would add is "kneel". It just popped in my head. I think it would be perfection for those of us that sometimes have trouble remembering to make that one on one time with Him a priority.
ReplyDeleteI love:
ReplyDeletecherish
memories
happiness
I love signs too! The word that is always on my mind, and my walls is LOVELY because my favorite scripture is phil 4:8 Whatever things are lovely, think on these things. I'm constantly trying to focus on the lovely things instead of the laundry, the bills, etc... It's a way to remind me of what really matters!
ReplyDeleteGreatest one I have seen in awile... "I kiss better than I cook" ;)
ReplyDeletemy fav sign in our house is an old wooden board from a farm painted with the saying you are my sunshine, hanging in my daughter's room. that might be too long for you though...
ReplyDeleteHere are some words I would like to see:

ReplyDeleteMy favourite sign in my home is actually one inspired by you! It says "Love never gives up, never loses Faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance"
I got that from your blog :)
I also like:
love is the beginning
Impossible = I'm possible
This home runs on love, laughter and cups of stong coffee
god heals everything
something wonderful is about to happen
calm down, have some tea
for some reason I love signs that say "LAUNDRY" in a laundry room. Easily amused, I know!
ReplyDeleteI also like seeing "CREATE" in a craft room :P
For colors I was going to say "Match Amy Butler's stuff" and then your next sentence said you had a pack of Amy waiting! ha!
patience
ReplyDeletekindness
pray

lots of aquas and reds!!! hoping whatever doesn't sell makes it to your shop!! :)
I loved the sign you made or bought awhile back that says Love God, Love Others. I've been wanting to make one for my kitchen but just haven't gotten to it yet. You should make some of those.:)
ReplyDeleteso i think mel covered just about all of 'em, except my personal fave- listen. what about making some bitty signs with numbers? i have number signs hanging in both kiddos rooms with their ages, and of course some around the house cause i heart anything with typography on it.

Some of my favorite phrases/verses are:
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.
Speak in love, walk in grace.
There's a bunch of sayings for baby rooms that I'm drawing a blank on...but those always sell well :D
I have the word {SERVE} in my kitchen and I love it. An awesome reminder to live each day serving others - which often happens in the kitchen! :)

i could go on and on and on...
oh, and i love, yellow, turquoise, green...
My word this year is "serve", which I actually haven't seen yet in the awesome list of words listed in the comments. I want to make one (another) of your fabulous fabric signs for our home in a very modern font/color scheme. You're welcome to borrow my idea. :)
ReplyDelete"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!"
ReplyDeleteooops, that's from Friday Night lights...I'm obsessed. :)
or any of the other suggestions would work!
my faves:
ReplyDeletedelight

LOVE this idea! I don't have any new ideas, but based on what has been suggested, I want 3 coordinating signs: Pray. Love. Play. for my kids playroom. So wish I was creative! Can't wait to see what you end up with!!
ReplyDeleteDo you read Lisa Leonard's blog? She talks about a word for the year. My word this year is "connect". I need to connect with people- not just through facebook or email or even by phone, but really connect with others. Ali Edwards has a great list on her blogsite for words, too.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I also like
"Flush"
Boys in the house. You know.
:-)
I also love your "love God, love others" idea and really want to make one for myself. But I also want one that says "Grace....receive it, give it." I wish I lived closer so I could actually buy one of your signs!
ReplyDeletepeace
ReplyDeletemy oldest is all about peace 7 peace signs these days.
as for colors....you had me at Amy Butler.
how about "NO WHINING" !
ReplyDeleteI have a sign that I bought at Christmas years ago, but it hangs in my house year 'round...it says "This House Believes".
Good Luck !
My favorite word for the year is Happiness. But then I also love
ReplyDeleteinspire, dream, create, love...and then I go back to Happiness again. I am glad you are making some signs. I bet you sell lots. Well, I am going to guess that you sell lots of whatever you make. :)

ReplyDeleteSilly, Sassy, Sweet, gorgeous, delish, fun, funny, yummy
ReplyDeleteI love just initials. That way people could pick up a few to spell out or just initials for their kids or what not. You could do some fancy single letters with short chubby boards. I have one above each towel hook for my kids. I've always wanted a big W for my mantle. Maybe some black & whites with cute paper?
ReplyDeleteHmmm....
ReplyDeleteI have a favorite saying...
"What would you attempt if you knew you could never fail?"
And I always like the signs that say
Love
Family
Home
but those are pretty expected. I hope this helps=)
As seen on MckMama's blog...
ReplyDeletewag more - bark less

ReplyDeleteAnd I have always loved the quote from winnie the pooh,
Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think
My mom has a sign hanging in her house that reads "All because two people fell in love". It is surrounded with pictures of my great grandparents, grandparents, parents....you get the picture, right? I love that sentiment and idea but her sign is very "country" and I am more of an Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, Tula Pink kind of girl. Good luck with you show!

And bright! BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT!!
I have a clock in my bathroom that says, "God's timing is always perfect." I LOVE THAT! I have looked EVERYWHERE for something, anything with that saying on it to give others as gifts. The other saying I love is written on a rug in my laundry room - "One load at a time."
ReplyDeleteMy grandpa had a sign when I was little, "This too shall pass". I love that. It reminds me to live in the moment (if it's good :) ) and to know that something will be over soon (if it's bad). You have so many good ideas on here! I love them all. I agree with the bright colors too- aqua, love aqua.
ReplyDeleteFaith and Family are my favs. I also like "Together is the best place to be."
ReplyDeleteI know you are probably only looking for one word signs, but I did see a sign the other day that said "Jesus knows me, this I love." It really made me stop in my tracks! Too bad their color choices were tragic or I would own it right now. Good luck!

Also anything beach cottagey because that's my favorite style of decor - even tho' I live in Illinois. It's probably pretty popular where you are though! So -
Beach
Beach house
Seashells
Ocean
Surf's Up
Surfer Girl / Surfer Dude
Colors - well same ones you like basically! Turquoise/teal/aqua, bright greens, yellows, pinks, red, chocolate brown, grays, blues.
I personally dislike orange and purple but I'd include some of those. Purples are trendy now in home decor.
When the heavens align, pigs fly, and there magically appears 3 extra hours in the day, I would like to make a sign that says, "What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?"
ReplyDeleteAlso Cupcake or cupcakes - I just adore them right now. And if you want to sell some to those Mormon type people make one that says CTR :)
