At Dollar Tree the other day while I was shopping for party supplies, I got distracted by these silver metal trays and crystal-esque candle holders.
A five dollar tiered tray was destined to come live with me.
For what?
Not sure, but I do love me quick cheap crafts and I also love me tiered trays.
shiny?
cheapy?
fakey?
granny?
cheesy?
Do I spray paint it, like I have been seeming to do to everything else?
Or embrace the shiny granny-ness?
Key Lime?
Sunshine?
White?
Aqua?
Because it is made out of things from Dollar Tree.
Did I mention how shiny it is?
Maybe I could throw it in the ocean for a few days. That would antique it nicely. But then again, $1.00 trays. They would probably disintegrate.
Thoughts?
ooh! definitely spray paint it! I say green or aqua!
ReplyDeleteI vote for Aqua too!!!
ReplyDeletemy heart belongs to spray paint so i say spray away. i heart that green color and think it would give it a really cool modern granny look. i think i might need to make one, too. :)
ReplyDeleteCan you take it apart still? I would spray the trays one color and the candlestick parts another color. :)
ReplyDeleteI love sterling and crystal shiny, but cheapy dollar store shiny is not the same, as you mentioned. I think your tray would look fantastic painted though! I like the idea of painting the trays one color and the candlesticks another, but all one color would be fun too. Good idea to put the plates and candlesticks together like that!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Heather at all a flutter. Go granny green! Can't wait to see it! I have one that is tiered and chippy white. I decorate it for the season. Getting ready to put starfish into it...Spray and post ;)Alyssa
ReplyDeleteSpray away!!
ReplyDeleteI vote granny green. Also wanted to let you know that you can use chalk board paint on those trays. I have made some leaving them shiny, and I sprayed one red and used the chalk board paint and hung with a ribbon.
ReplyDeleteI like the aqua! I also think it might look a bit cuter if it had a bottom stand. Maybe an upside down sundae cup?...
ReplyDeleteSPRAY! Because I'm interested to see what it'll look like. And pink gets my vote.. I wanna see pink! :)
ReplyDeleteooh...LOVE it...are you kidding me...paint it....gosh....how WOULD we live without paint....and dye....and trim...great idea...now get ta paintin...cant wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteOh and I said trim...cause in my head I was seeing pom pom trim around each tray....eeeek.
I personally kinda dig it.
ReplyDeleteSpray paint it that green color. I would love to see a new picture.
ReplyDeletepaint the trays, leave the candlesticks clear. Perfect mix of retro and modern!
ReplyDeleteAll keylime.
ReplyDeletei just used that lime spray paint for a basket and I love it!! But sunshine would look wonderful with your aqua walls for the summer time!! just sayn.
ReplyDeleteAqua!!! I just spray painted a cute bench aqua...think you would like it! Come see - it;s on my blog!
ReplyDeleteSpray! But I would do it in three different shades of aqua - bottom to top, dark to light!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how it turns out!! I have a can of paint almost that exact color waiting on me for a little project!! Maybe I can get outside before it reaches 100+ degrees this weekend and get going on that!!
ReplyDeleteHappy painting!
I think it would be awesome in yellow. Just the trays though-leave the stands clear (unless it looks awful then spray it all). Can't wait to see the end result!!
ReplyDeleteWhat if you spray the plates one color (let dry), put those little circle garage sale stickers all over, then spray it another color (let dry, remove stickers) to get a little whimsical, polkadot granny? If you did that, then I'd leave the candlesticks alone. Just my two cents!
ReplyDeletejust SPRAAAAY it!! green OR aqua! :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Jill
I say spray paint it as well. But, I am liking the sunshine color. It would go with so many other options you are using it for. But, either way. Happiness to a cheap fun find!
ReplyDeleteMy only concern with spray paint is that you couldn't put food on it because spray paint is not "food grade" paint. But if you plan to just put non-edibles, or don't care if you poison your guests, I say GO FOR IT! :D Kidding of course...I know you would never poison your guests :D
ReplyDeleteHow about mod podge some cool scrapbook papers over the trays, seal with acrylic spray, and reassemble?
ReplyDeleteAre you going to permanently cement the candlesticks, or leave it semi-take-apartable? What type of glue will you be using? Just curious...
Paint it aqua or green, and if you want to serve food on it just line it with some cute patterned paper. I think it's darling, I love it!
ReplyDeletespray away! very clever ;)
ReplyDeletei've been spraying away, too. i would totally do lemon yellow. i've gone through 4 cans recently. =)
ReplyDeletei think it will be adorable.
For the sake of all of us who have wanted to do this before, spray! :)
ReplyDeletemust use spray paint!! go for the green
ReplyDeleteFirst scratch it with sandpaper.
ReplyDeleteThen spray paint each tray a different color.
Then bring it to me as a present.
2 words: SPRAY PAINT.
ReplyDeleteI say spray each layer a different color! and maybe go lime green, aqua, lime green. Can't wait to see what ya do!
ReplyDelete...is spray paint food safe?
Oh, I love it! Is that weird!?
ReplyDeleteI vote robin egg blue.
I would be worried about putting food on it after spray paint. But I am a hippie chemical hater. :)
ReplyDeleteSpray it!!!! Spray it! I love spray paint! What a great idea. I am a cupcake maker and am ALWAYS trying to find a cheap way to display them. Thanks!
ReplyDeletePaint it, It would be cute to spray paint the sticks in stripes...
ReplyDeleteSpray paint!!!!!!!! Key lime :)
ReplyDeleteGo wild!!! Come on it was $1, have some from fun!
ReplyDeleteI do love the Granny-ness of it, but I say go with the spray paint! White would show off whatever you put on the tray, but aqua would also be lovely! Can't wait to see what you choose! Love your blog!
ReplyDeletehmm...spray paint it white...and then, since the paint is not food safe, you could use different pretty scrapbook paper to make it all fancy cute looking under your food and you could always change the paper to match whatever the color scheme is...green or aqua or pink or whatever...
ReplyDeleteI am a silver, shiny kind of girl even if it's not real! Is there some kind of paint that would give it that 'throw in the ocean' look? I'd do that and just spray the crystalesque holders, but that's just me :)
ReplyDeleteSpray the trays but keep the "crystal". It will look vintagey.
ReplyDeletespray paint! i just took a page from your book and spray painted some old wooden tables yesterday; perfection. i'm addicted. :)
ReplyDeleteI, "the spray paint queen",say SPRAY IT...with that most fabulous apple green !
ReplyDeleteYou MUST post pics...I just might be headed to the dollar tree myself ! ha!
Spray paint all the way. Aqua or the green would be cute! I found an aluminum tiered tray on ebay and spray painted it a bright berry pink and I L-O-V-E it!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm all for painting just the trays and leaving the candle sticks, it'd be perfectly kitschy! I like the green in the picture.
ReplyDeleteSpray it!
ReplyDeleteI'd say the green or yellow.
I think the green would be unexpected and fun!!
I definitely think you should spray paint it. Aqua or Green would be awesome :)
ReplyDeleteYou are the queen of spray paint, my friend! Can't wait to see what they turn out like! :) xoxox Holly
ReplyDeleteooh. tiffany blue all the way.
ReplyDeletespray paint it...go with green or the aqua.
ReplyDeleteI kinda like it the way it is. Funky Shiny Cheap. Yeah baby!
ReplyDeletespray it. white or turquoise.
ReplyDeletedon't even think about keeping them shiny like that. k? ;)
Depends on whether you plan to serve food on the trays. If you paint it {{aqua!!}}, then you may have to be careful to use tray liners.
ReplyDeleteSo, a couple of questions for you. Were you at Blog Sugar tonight? And I didn't get to meet you and I am so, so bummed.
ReplyDeleteSecond, were those your trays painted pink that i TOTALLY LOVED?????
I was inspecting them closely. I couldn't believe they were plastic. I really, really loved them.
So when I saw this post I was doubly sad I didn't talk to you tonight.
Maybe we can meet next time.
Oh, and if those weren't your trays and you weren't there but your cards were, then this is a really weird coincidence.
Love from Greta
I say aqua, lime green & yellow! or my fave combo pink & aqua! you know I got the same candle sticks from the dollar tree but I was gonna but them in between mod podged pizza pans but didnt get a chance to do it..lol I got the idea from tater tots & jello blog she also made the pizza pan into a serving tray with handles! super cute! the only thing I did do was make cake stands with upside down sundae cups with cool lime green & aqua plates. I need to go to the dollar store and get my weekly fix I haven't been there in awhile! esp for crafty stuff! gotta love dollar store craft blog too! but any color you do will be wicked cute! You always make cute things!
ReplyDeleteAren't planning birthday's super fun? I love it!
~karin marie<333 :)
I say spray paint, as long as it is okay to put food on rustoleum paint :)
ReplyDeleteOOOO I love the idea of spray painting the tray and the candle holders different colors!! I would spray paint the candle holders aqua and the trays a fun green!! =)
ReplyDeleteI think the whole idea is stupid.
ReplyDeleteNot really, but I know of no one else who can garner 60+ comments about a $4 tray.
That is all.
I say aqua or pink :o) Can't wait to see what you do!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like from all these comments that you will be painting it ;) I say go green! Since they were so cheap I would have probably tried to antique one in my "rusting juice" just to see what would happen ;)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should just spray paint the trays, and leave the candlestick holders in their pretty shiny self! Or if you have a smaller tray put it on top? It's super pretty either way you go!
ReplyDeleteI am loving your blog so far (I've read beyond this post as well) and I'll give Lindsey a shout out for putting you on her blog! This is a super creative, wholesome blog that is now on my follow list.
(BTW, you ROCK!)
I say spray paint the trays aqua and leave the candle holders the way they are! Aqua will be lovely for summer. I love the tiered tray, such a cute idea!!! I might need to stop at Dollar Tree today...
ReplyDeletehere from Lindsey's blog and I want to tell you that I LOVE! this idea, I have needed (wanted) a cake plate and I may just visit the dollar store to get mine.... PS. Spray the heck out of that thing!
ReplyDeleteIt is rather shiny! Perhaps Sunshine would be lovely and cheerful? :)
ReplyDeleteI definitely want to see it spray painted! Is it still ok to serve food on after? I like the idea for sure!
ReplyDeletePopping in from Pleated Poppy (although I follow both of your blogs). So which color did you pick???
ReplyDeleteI also say spray paint it...key lime..♥
ReplyDeletekey lime would look pretty!
ReplyDeleteSpray paint! What's the worst that could happen? You loose $2 :)
ReplyDeletego aqua for sure!

I can't wait to see how this project turns out.
ReplyDeleteI love making stuff cuter! I say spray it and maybe decoupage the trays in quatrefoil or scrapbook paper or something. here's the pattern from tatertos and jello. http://tatertotsandjello.blogspot.com/2010/05/quatrafoil-painting-project-with-free.html
ReplyDeletelove your blog! im becoming a follower!
Mmm, I love how a can of spray paint holds ENDLESS possibilities of creative craftiness!!! Can't wait to see the final product!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely white!
ReplyDeleteI vote for white, maybe with a faux distressed finish... not sure how exactly to do that, but it would look great : )
ReplyDeleteOkay, I've actually been thinking on this. Maybe you should do different colors? Have a bright tray with different colored tiers? AH I don't know!
ReplyDeleteI had been to your blog before when you were taking a break. So glad to see you blogging again. What a beautiful bald baby. ((((HUGS)))
ReplyDeleteI think paint it a fun bold color! lime green or aqua. I'm not a pink girl, but I think would also be cute. With the right accessories and foods, black could also be really cool. I would definitely not leave the shiny, tho. I'm betting you can tell me look at it in real life, that it looks like its from the dollar store. Its a great find, tho!
ReplyDeletepaint paint paint! I vote for aqua.
ReplyDeleteSpray it! I love white trays, but I'm thinking aqua would be great for summer! :)
ReplyDeleteYay! Aqua! Came over from the Pleated Poppy. Cute blog!
ReplyDeleteI would go for the white or aqua. I think it will look great!
ReplyDeletei need to visit the dollar tree more often i guess, i love this!! i'm loving aqua and yellow lately!
ReplyDeleteSUNSHINE!! What a great idea. So fun!
ReplyDeleteSpray it! And now I shall head to my Dollar Tree...love that store!
