At Dollar Tree the other day while I was shopping for party supplies, I got distracted by these silver metal trays and crystal-esque candle holders.
A five dollar tiered tray was destined to come live with me.
For what?
Not sure,  but I do love me quick cheap crafts and I also love me tiered trays.

But I am thinking that it is a bit too...
shiny?
cheapy?
fakey?
granny?
cheesy?

Do I spray paint it, like I have been seeming to do to everything else?
Or embrace the shiny granny-ness?

Key Lime?
Sunshine?
White?
Aqua?

Because it is made out of things from Dollar Tree.
Did I mention how shiny it is?
Maybe I could throw it in the ocean for a few days.  That would antique it nicely.  But then again, $1.00 trays.  They would probably disintegrate.

Thoughts?

  2. my heart belongs to spray paint so i say spray away. i heart that green color and think it would give it a really cool modern granny look. i think i might need to make one, too. :)

  3. Can you take it apart still? I would spray the trays one color and the candlestick parts another color. :)

  4. I love sterling and crystal shiny, but cheapy dollar store shiny is not the same, as you mentioned. I think your tray would look fantastic painted though! I like the idea of painting the trays one color and the candlesticks another, but all one color would be fun too. Good idea to put the plates and candlesticks together like that!

  5. I agree with Heather at all a flutter. Go granny green! Can't wait to see it! I have one that is tiered and chippy white. I decorate it for the season. Getting ready to put starfish into it...Spray and post ;)Alyssa

  6. I vote granny green. Also wanted to let you know that you can use chalk board paint on those trays. I have made some leaving them shiny, and I sprayed one red and used the chalk board paint and hung with a ribbon.

  7. I like the aqua! I also think it might look a bit cuter if it had a bottom stand. Maybe an upside down sundae cup?...

  8. SPRAY! Because I'm interested to see what it'll look like. And pink gets my vote.. I wanna see pink! :)

  15. I can't wait to see how it turns out!! I have a can of paint almost that exact color waiting on me for a little project!! Maybe I can get outside before it reaches 100+ degrees this weekend and get going on that!!

    Happy painting!

  16. I think it would be awesome in yellow. Just the trays though-leave the stands clear (unless it looks awful then spray it all). Can't wait to see the end result!!

  17. What if you spray the plates one color (let dry), put those little circle garage sale stickers all over, then spray it another color (let dry, remove stickers) to get a little whimsical, polkadot granny? If you did that, then I'd leave the candlesticks alone. Just my two cents!

  18. just SPRAAAAY it!! green OR aqua! :)
    Blessings!

  19. I say spray paint it as well. But, I am liking the sunshine color. It would go with so many other options you are using it for. But, either way. Happiness to a cheap fun find!

  20. My only concern with spray paint is that you couldn't put food on it because spray paint is not "food grade" paint. But if you plan to just put non-edibles, or don't care if you poison your guests, I say GO FOR IT! :D Kidding of course...I know you would never poison your guests :D

  21. How about mod podge some cool scrapbook papers over the trays, seal with acrylic spray, and reassemble?

Are you going to permanently cement the candlesticks, or leave it semi-take-apartable? What type of glue will you be using? Just curious...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Paint it aqua or green, and if you want to serve food on it just line it with some cute patterned paper. I think it's darling, I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. i've been spraying away, too. i would totally do lemon yellow. i've gone through 4 cans recently. =)

i think it will be adorable.

  24. For the sake of all of us who have wanted to do this before, spray! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. First scratch it with sandpaper.
Then spray paint each tray a different color.
Then bring it to me as a present.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I say spray each layer a different color! and maybe go lime green, aqua, lime green. Can't wait to see what ya do!

    ...is spray paint food safe?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, I love it! Is that weird!?

    I vote robin egg blue.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would be worried about putting food on it after spray paint. But I am a hippie chemical hater. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Spray it!!!! Spray it! I love spray paint! What a great idea. I am a cupcake maker and am ALWAYS trying to find a cheap way to display them. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Go wild!!! Come on it was $1, have some from fun!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I do love the Granny-ness of it, but I say go with the spray paint! White would show off whatever you put on the tray, but aqua would also be lovely! Can't wait to see what you choose! Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  33. hmm...spray paint it white...and then, since the paint is not food safe, you could use different pretty scrapbook paper to make it all fancy cute looking under your food and you could always change the paper to match whatever the color scheme is...green or aqua or pink or whatever...

  34. I am a silver, shiny kind of girl even if it's not real! Is there some kind of paint that would give it that 'throw in the ocean' look? I'd do that and just spray the crystalesque holders, but that's just me :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Spray the trays but keep the "crystal". It will look vintagey.

    ReplyDelete
  36. spray paint! i just took a page from your book and spray painted some old wooden tables yesterday; perfection. i'm addicted. :)

  38. Spray paint all the way. Aqua or the green would be cute! I found an aluminum tiered tray on ebay and spray painted it a bright berry pink and I L-O-V-E it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm all for painting just the trays and leaving the candle sticks, it'd be perfectly kitschy! I like the green in the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Spray it!
I'd say the green or yellow.
I think the green would be unexpected and fun!!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  45. spray it. white or turquoise.

don't even think about keeping them shiny like that. k? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Depends on whether you plan to serve food on the trays. If you paint it {{aqua!!}}, then you may have to be careful to use tray liners.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So, a couple of questions for you. Were you at Blog Sugar tonight? And I didn't get to meet you and I am so, so bummed.
Second, were those your trays painted pink that i TOTALLY LOVED?????
I was inspecting them closely. I couldn't believe they were plastic. I really, really loved them.
So when I saw this post I was doubly sad I didn't talk to you tonight.
Maybe we can meet next time.

Oh, and if those weren't your trays and you weren't there but your cards were, then this is a really weird coincidence.

    Love from Greta

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think the whole idea is stupid.

Not really, but I know of no one else who can garner 60+ comments about a $4 tray.

    That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I say aqua or pink :o) Can't wait to see what you do!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Looks like from all these comments that you will be painting it ;) I say go green! Since they were so cheap I would have probably tried to antique one in my "rusting juice" just to see what would happen ;)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maybe you should just spray paint the trays, and leave the candlestick holders in their pretty shiny self! Or if you have a smaller tray put it on top? It's super pretty either way you go!

I am loving your blog so far (I've read beyond this post as well) and I'll give Lindsey a shout out for putting you on her blog! This is a super creative, wholesome blog that is now on my follow list.

    (BTW, you ROCK!)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Okay, I've actually been thinking on this. Maybe you should do different colors? Have a bright tray with different colored tiers? AH I don't know!

  70. I think paint it a fun bold color! lime green or aqua. I'm not a pink girl, but I think would also be cute. With the right accessories and foods, black could also be really cool. I would definitely not leave the shiny, tho. I'm betting you can tell me look at it in real life, that it looks like its from the dollar store. Its a great find, tho!
