A rainbow of Dollar Tree goodness has descended upon my house.
Meet the new family of tiered trays.
I have a feeling they might just make you smile.
Then want to have a party.
Or organize your jewelry.
Or desk.
But first you need to head to Dollar Tree and pick up:
One tube of Super Glue Fix-All Adhesive,
three silver-esque trays,
two crystal-esque candlesticks,
per tiered tray that you plan to make.
Be warned.
You will want to make many more than just one.
Many, many, more.
On your way home stop by your fave hardware or craft store to get
spray paint,
spray primer &
a mask.
This is stinky business.
Also get a canvas tarp if you don't have one.
Canvas tarp: $20.
Husband happy that you didn't spray paint the patio: priceless.
Best investment ever.
First spray the front and back of each tray and candlestick with primer.
Sort of an annoying step, but so very worth it, considering how shiny and smooth they are.
This will help the color stick and stay on through what is sure to be many a use.
Then start your rainbow party.
Two to three light coats is the way to go.
Be patient. Spray paint dries fast, but drips and goops if you get all crazy and lay it on too heavy.
Spray the bottoms of the trays too, since you will be able to see them, if even just a little.
The starfish has nothing to do with this project. It is just another casualty of my need to change things. Nothing is safe when I have a can of spray paint in my hands. White starfish on a white shelf. Lame. Sunshine yellow starfish on a white shelf. Awesome.
Mix and match the colors together to find what combos you like the most.
I thought that I would like them all together.
I don't.
Which is weird since I adore un-matching things.
But this was a bit too...
Too something.
I also thought that I would leave some of the candlesticks clear, but as usual, I can't refrain from the paint.
After trying a few different glues, I was happiest with Gorilla Super Glue.
J/K!!!
Apparently if you want your tray to hold more than air and if you ever want to touch it or move it, DO NOT use Gorilla Super Glue. It is awesome for many other uses. Tray making, not so much.
I went back to Dollar Tree and picked up a tube of Super Glue's Fix-All Adhesive. It is amazing. Stinky, but amazing. E-6000 is another great choice of adhesive. Stinky though.
Run a bead of glue along the bottom of each candlestick and then press it to the center of the bottom of two of the trays.
Let dry.
By using the candlesticks upside down, you get more useable area on your trays.
When the glue is dry, flip it over and attach the third tray on top.
Again, let dry with added weight for better adhesion.
When this tier is dry, add the other tray and candlestick beneath it.
Let dry.
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Smile, smile, smile.
I really only meant to make one tray.
But how could I resist these colors?
From Home Depot-
Rust-Oleum:
Sun Yellow Gloss
Berry Pink Gloss
Key Lime Gloss
From Michael's-
Valspar Petrol Blue- Silk
The Valspar is my new boyfriend. Not only is it the best color EVER, but it covered even better that the Rust-Oleum which actually covers pretty dang well.
I heart you Valspar.
{Keep in mind that these trays are
NOT food safe or dishwasher safe.}
But don't let that stop you from using them for parties. You just need to be a little careful and creative. I plan on using cupcake liners, doilies or scrapbook papers underneath the food, to keep my guests from dropping dead at our parties. That would be brutal on our already expensive homeowner's policy.
But mostly they are going to be eye candy organization.
I think even a stack of bills would become suddenly delightful on one of these beauties.
My husband can't decide if I have gone tray crazy.
Perhaps I have.
But that is just fine by me.
Those turned out really good. I love all the bright colors!
ReplyDeleteTotally doing this as a craft show display!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME goodness... Lovin' the colors, but that yellow and green one wants to come live with me... Just sayin'... For some reason I am in love with yellow this summer and well, Green and I have always been lovers... the end.
ReplyDeleteThese are super fun. I love the color combos!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love!!!
ReplyDeletefabulous. absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeletereminds me of all the brightly colored house in the Keys -- love it!

ReplyDeleteI tried to choose my favorite color combo but then gave up--they are all awesome. Oh and they would make really cute jewelry holders on a dresser...
ReplyDeleteSo cuper cute, Julie! Hope you saw your special feature post. :)
ReplyDeleteTeresa @ www.itisagoodday.blogspot.com
you talked me into a new craft project, and the green and blue one is my fave FO SHO!
ReplyDeleteThey turned out sooo cute. I would so make them know if I had storage space in my house. I will have to book mark this idea so when I have my next get together I will have to make some.
ReplyDeleteGreat Work!!!
Love love love them all!! They're like candy. Fabulous!!
ReplyDeletelove, love, love them...i can't wait to run to my dollar tree and make one. i need one for my hair clips...so pretty!
ReplyDeletethanks for the step by step...you ROCK!

A rainbow of fabulousness! Functional and pretty :)
ReplyDeletei am thrilled that you painted, already. thrilled.

Happy, Happy, cute trays!! I LOOOVE the colors! :) I see a Dollar Store visit in the near future!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Jill
Holy awesomeness!! That is just pure happiness. I want one or two or three too. Thanks for the step by step directions. I think those trays just speak some happy language. Love the combos. Love the colors. Just love. Yep. I get into crazy happy things that I am sure my husbands sits back and smiles and thinks "yep, I married one awesome crazy person." But, good thing our husbands love the craziness in us right? Happiness.
ReplyDeleteLove the trays....they turned out so good.
ReplyDeletei have some of those silver trays in my craft show stash and i'm gonna pull them out so i can upcycle them. they will be soooo much cuter your way.
ReplyDeletei have that same frame. found it in the as is section for $4. it has a little chunk missing from the bottom, but i don't care. so far it has been 3 colors. man, i love spray paint.
Those are FANTASTIC!! I think I need to make a dollar tree run tomorrow (and home depot too!). I'm with you though...all the colors together was a bit too Punky Brewster-esque. I like the blue candlesticks and green trays. Awesome. I may have to try leaving the candlesticks clear, but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteyou know how you couldn't think of how to describe that first multi colored tray combo? well, i had a pair of bicycle shorts in all those colors back in 1991. paired with my aqua-net teased wave bangs and my hightop L.A. Gears. That tray would have been rad.
ReplyDeleteLOVE. Want to put all my jewelry all over those gorgeous trays!
ReplyDeleteand LOL about the bills comment.
...and if Jeannett wore her bicycle shorts while carrying the matching tray, THAT would have been rad.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming over soon. You will serve me toffee crack on the pink and blue beauty, and I will bring my marshmallow craziness over in tin foil. You will make fun of me and I will steal your tray while you laugh. Laughter. Trays. Sugar. It's a win-win, really.
I'm sorry, but your writing style just cracks me up. I Think I'm going to try this craft with two candlesticks - glued on opposing sides of the same layer, you know? So it's more open in between for stacking the boring-now-made-exciting items like bills. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOH.MY.GOODNESS.
ReplyDeleteThese turned out adorable !I do believe that the dollar tree is calling my name..today...right now !And I so can see a green/blue tiered tray sitting on my desk !
Thank you...you crafty godess...for this fab idea !
Those look really great! Sweet colors!!
ReplyDeleteMargaret
They look SOOOO pretty! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI can just see little cups of skittles all over those, or jelly beans (but i dont like jelly beans) or the yummy colors of m&ms from Michael's... oooh or jolly ranchers... I have candy on the brain! ~ what a rainbow of dee.lish
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Can I ask one question? Why are they not food safe? If they are coated with a sealant, would they be? Just wondering!
ReplyDeleteAlternate title: Cirque du Tiered Tray
ReplyDeleteCheryl's on to something with her craft show display idea-- how amazing would your pretty. messy. flowers. be on those trays? The next Queen Bee Market perhaps? Hm...
I take back my earlier post of not spray painting the cheesy trays.
ReplyDeleteI blame it on a lack of coffee. Or limited vision. Maybe both. But I digress.
Awesomely cute trays. I want to go spray paint trays now.
My husband thanks you.

ReplyDeleteHow did you wash these? Did your food taste like spray paint after? I tried this and.....it didn't so work so well :0( The painting part went fine, but I was concerned about having a weird tasted with the food so I ran them through the dish washer and the paint didn't handle it so well. Just to let you know I finally made some fun and "pink" tiered trays! And as you warned
ReplyDeleteI will want to make many, many, many, moro {for Halloween!}
I love it! Thank you again! Check them out at
www.sweetbambinos.blogspot.com
I love the trays :D they are so cute.
ReplyDeleteI have one suggestion. If the trays will have much weight on them or if they are going to be sitting on the same counter/shelf/furniture for a long time, especially if its a painted surface, it may be a good idea to glue felt to the bottom. Cheap craft store felt works. Or if they sit on a paper doily, table cloth or napkin that will help. Rustoleum and valspar shouldnt cause problems but sometimes the cheaper spray paint will stick to other surfaces and actually pull off of the item you painted. That could leave bright paint on a white shelf.
I am going to have to make some of these for my wedding! Black candlesticks and silver trays... covered in cookies :D :D :D Actually, if a person wanted to they could use stencils to make coordinating patterns. zomgosh!
Awesome blog :)

ReplyDeleteI did these in plain white back in may! :)
How great are the tiered trays! Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I love these. I ran out today and got the trays at my local dollar tree. However, they didn't have the candle sticks. Now I have to find another store that carries them. thank you.
ReplyDeleteam making hese for my twin first birthday party!!! I can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS!! I am relatively new (been diving in full throttle about 4 months) to the world of crafting (especially interested in upcycle, re-purpose,and frugal crafts). So I recently decided to plan a surprise birthday party for my grandmother, with cupcakes instead of cake (I ADORE cupcakes), and have been searching around DIY party decor and stuff, very vintage/indie/retro kind of feels. So I just went today and got the stuff to make these stands, and I really could not be happier with the results!!! They were so cheap to make, and so so simple, but the finished product is so cute, and chic, and pretty! The tutorial was so great while doing it, and I appreciate the added advice from your trial run (So many ppl leave out the details)and I was super drawn to being able to totally personalize the colors to fit my grandmother unique personality and the feel I'm trying to go for at the party. Thanks a million for this, I'm addicted and I can't wait to make a hundred more!!! PS. I found three different shapes of the trays (Oval (like in the pic above), round, and square! Can't wait to have some fun mixing shapes AND colors!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute! I am going to leave them Silver and Clear. We looked and looked for the right cupcake stand, and this is perfect for our Christmas Eve Party!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful idea! I probably should make some for holidays as we used our cupcake stand to make Christmas tree ;)
ReplyDeleteI just spotted these on Pinterest and love them. Krylon makes a non toxic spray paint that comes in a decent array of colors. That way food could go directly on the tray and you can even paint with it indoors. I an assuming these trays are plastic which probably couldn't be used with this paint. Maybe you could with the right priming but for someone who wanted to use glass or ceramic plates this would be a good option.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.krylon.com/products/h2o_latex/
they are so cute! but, how can you make them food safe?
ReplyDeleteEither put paper below your food or use cupcake liners.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE them!!!! I'm going to make some soon!!!
ReplyDeleteI was going to joke and say crazy...maybe...but could be all the fumes. hahahahha :D
ReplyDeleteMy final coat is out in the garage drying now! I am creative challenged and this is my first ever project. They already look amazing! Thanks for your step by step instructions :) I'm using mine as cupcake towers for a baby shower I'm hosting and then will be giving one to the mom to be (same colors as her nursery) and the other I will be using as a stand for my little girls thousands of hair accessories (her room happens to have the same colors). Thanks again ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are brilliant! Thank you!
ReplyDeletethank you so much! these are adorable!! i had been waiting and waiting for an excuse to make them, and finally found one when i had a baby shower to plan. referenced your site in my blog post: All Things with Purpose: A Spring Baby Shower
ReplyDeleteOMG I love you and your writing and this post. Oh the trays are amazing too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks a million, I'm planning my baby girls first Birthday party and wanted to do it all myself. thanks
ReplyDeleteseriously cute. and you crack me up!!! i love it! thanks for making me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThese will work great in primary colors for my Grandsons "Curious George" first birthday party.
ReplyDeleteThese are fabulous! Love the bright colors!
ReplyDeleteI have tried for months to find the candlesticks at Dollar Tree...to no avail. Any idea of another store that might carry them? I look everywhere I go and haven't had any luck.
ReplyDeleteYou can actually order them on line at dollartree.com but you have to order a case of them. I have seen them at Wal-Mart also.
DeleteI love these! Thanks so much for sharing all the details, including the brands of the paint and the names of the colors.
ReplyDeleteThese are just so awesome and your instructions had me laughing out loud. I need to get my mitts on some of that amazing blue Valspar!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this I love them!!! I made them, but with colorful plastic plate/trays from the Dollar Tree. They turned out great and are safe for food!! :)
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way when I stumbled across a pin on Pinterest with trays like these. Like you, I RAN to the Dollar Store and got all my supplies. I ended up getting a glass vase to put between one set and a plastic candlestick on the other set. I spray painted them a marbled dark brown to match my bath cabinets that I had just finished painted from another pin I spotted. I have all my "bath" stuff on mine and it gives me so much more room on the counter. Love them and was so cheap and easy to make!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get that frame from ?
ReplyDeleteIkea. It comes in black and they make a mirror too.
DeleteI am happy to find this very useful for me, as it contains lot of information. I always prefer to read the quality content
ReplyDeletethanks for share me...

Super cute!! I'm making this for my daughter's birthday party in November. She's having a Minnie Mouse party & the colors are black, white & hot pink. I think I'll paint the plates hot pink & the candlesticks black.

I had been thinking of doing something similar (not the stacked trays but just one tray and candle stick for a pseudo cake stand). Glad I found your project with all the helpful tidbits of info. BTW, I heart Valspar paint, too.
ReplyDeleteGoood!
ReplyDeleteI just found this post - and can I say, BRILLIANT! I wonder if sealing the trays might help to make them food-safe? Regardless, they are beautiful, and I am SO jonesing to make these!

Thanks for sharing! I linked to this post in my Glow Party series. http://www.morewithlessmom.com/index.php/2014/06/25/diy-glow-party-teen-birthday-rave-decorations/
ReplyDeleteSooooo, I know it's like 4 years later but I wanted to let you know that I made these for my daughter's first birthday and absolutely LOVE them. Her theme is Candyland/Sweet Shoppe and they are perfect for the cake & candy table. They've kind of become an obsession, I've made TONS of them. Thank you for the great tutorial! Saved me tons of money on ugly, generic cupcake stands. :)
ReplyDeletePS. To anyone looking to make these - DO NOT skip the primer. Trust me, I tried.
You can make some food safe by using clear trays and spraying the back with paint that has primer in it. :)
ReplyDeleteOMG i love this idea and i was killing my self to find a perfect holder for my cake table i am going to so enjoy this.
